IntroductionThe title of the thread might make it sound as if this post will answer all questions regarding crafting, however, that is not the case. On the contrary, I might ask more questions than I answer. What I'm writing here is more what I have found out when playing. I hope that we can solve the mystery of crafting together so we maybe can put it up on the wiki.
All right, let's get started, shall we?
BackgroundAt some point through the game, most likely from a quest or three, I gained three items. They looked like this

and just sat in my inventory. I was wondering for the longest time what they were for and I will get to that soon.
So, as I was levelling up, I needed to buy new armor because I didn't get everything from monster drops. But the new armor got more and more expensive. I saw that crafted armor was cheaper to make, so I figured I'd save some money and craft my own gear. But upon trying that, I realised that I could not craft anything at the NPC. I had the money and the items required for crafting, but the "craft it!" button was disabled.
I was annoyed that I had everything for crafting, but not being able to craft. So I went to consult my trusty friend Google. I googled some random stuff and found a site I have looked at before for foreign games. I browsed around and found a picture of the crafting window at an NPC. I translated some of the text and found out that I'd need crafting skills to craft. D'oh! Now, how do I acquire these skills so I can finally make my armor?
DiscoveriesIn (Wings) town, there is an NPC I have got quests from when levelling up and it always seems to have new quests when I check back. I had apparently not explored all options when talking to this NPC, and I stumbled upon a window that looked much like the one where I've previously got new skills or upgraded old ones. This window had the three icons I showed earlier. I didn't take any screenshot at this point, but getting the skills was free and didn't require any skill points. I clicked on all three, the items in my inventory disappeared, and the skills were placed as passive skills in my skill window (alt+R).
The image below shows the NPC (at 327, 427 for Wings) and the window after having acquired the skills:

I also have three quests where the rewards are just these skill items, but each costs 20,000 of in-game currency. You can see in the image above how the icons are greyed out, and I believe those quest items are needed to get level 2 of each skill.
Although I did say that I had the items and all for crafting, I bought the item I was going to craft before I found all this, so I have yet to craft anything. From the skill images, I assume that I can craft weapons, armor, and accessories.
Final notesNow for the questions bit... I still don't know exactly what is needed to get these "skill items" or if there is any level requirement for when being able to craft. I would also like to know when and how we can learn to make potions and casual clothes. Not having crafted anything myself, I don't know if there is any chance of failure when crafting and I don't know if it's possible to craft items with special modifiers like the blue items have. Also, what is the "jade" mentioned in the FAQ in the wiki?
If you have spotted any errors in my deductions, please correct me. Also, if you know something more than what I have discussed here, please share your knowledge.
Update 1 - Where to craftHere's some more information that might come in handy. Items are crafted at the NPC that sells them ready-made, so go to blacksmith if you want to craft weapons.
Option for crafting highlighted:

If you see this window, you pressed the right option:
Update 2 - Why crafting skills have levelsLevelling up and wanting to craft the level 13 staff, I happily went to the NPC with my snazzy skills and all the materials needed to craft the item. However, my happiness didn't last very long... I found at the crafting window that my skills weren't good enough to craft the item I desired. It seems like higher level items require higher levels of the skills as well as more rare and advanced materials.
The following image shows where to look to find out which level of the skill is needed:

- Name of the skill needed as well as the current level of it. None of the text in white is there if you do not have the skill.
- Name of the skill as well as the required level to craft the selected item. Notice how the "2" is greyed out since I only have level 1 of the skill.
I guess I will have to sell some items to get the 60,000 I need and upgrade my skills if I still want to be able to try to craft. Stay tuned for the continuation of the story!
Update 3 - Benefits of craftingNot wanting to wait with crafting any longer, I gave in and crafted my first item! I chose to make the level 5 Wing armor piece mostly used by Clerics. I am including pictures with comparisons of the results and some conclusions.

As you can see from the picture, I crafted a +2(!) level 5 chest armor piece. This one is much better than the level 5 one from the NPC. Now, I need to craft more to see if I was just lucky to get a +2 one and to see if crafting can fail or not. I am very excited to learn that there are benefits to crafting!
Update 4 - More on levels of crafting skillsAfter first gaining the three skill items (
) for crafting, I received three quests. Each quest only had one requirement, which was to have 20,000 of the in-game currency, and the rewards were items just like those I used to get the crafting skills in the first place. I figured that these were needed to level the skills up since I saw that was possible at the NPC. So I sold some junk I saw wasn't needed for crafting and somehow got 20,000. Wanting to upgrade my armor crafting skill, I made sure to choose the right quest at the quest NPC so I'd get the skill item for armor. After double-checking and triple-checking so I accepted the correct quest, I finally had the armor item in my bag. The items are not needed for upgrading skills. I went to the skills NPC in "Tree Town" to upgrade my skill...
Skill-upgrade window and my inventory:

As you have probably figured out by now, I couldn't upgrade my skill
even though I had the item. I had already noticed how a progress bar increased with each crafted item and a number changed in the decription of the skill. I found that 1 crafted item gave 10% and increased the number in the description by 1.
Crafting window at 100% and skill description saying 10/10:

Once I had levelled the skill up to 100%, I was ready to go to the skill NPC. This time I could upgrade my skill!
Skill available for upgrading with 500 skill points and 1000 coins:

What was funny when I upgraded my skill was that the item stayed in my bag. I'm not yet sure what the reason for that was because the items for skill level 1 were all removed. That was because the items weren't needed.Playing around with the level 2 armor crafting, I found that each item crafted still gave 10% (or added 1 to the item description number). The cap had also only increased from x/10 to x/20, so it seems like only 10 items need to be crafted before upgrading to level 3. I'm not yet sure how to go about upgrading the skills to level 3, but that is something I'd like to look into.
Crafting skills seem to be the only skills that require levelling up...
Update 5 - Costs of crafting skillsThis is just for future reference and still incomplete. I am not sure how high the crafting skills can be upgraded.
This is also the list for each skill rather than all collectively and is only valid for the first three skills (armor, weapon, accessory).
- First level:
- Skill item gained from quest which is available at level 5. (Required to acquire the actual skill.)
- Free to get at crafting skills NPC.
- Second level:
- 500 SP
- 1,000 coins
- Third level:
- 2,500 SP
- 5,000 coins
- Fourth level:
- Available from level 50.
- At lvl 50, you get new crafting quests. For armor, weapon, and accessory, you will eventually have to craft 3 specific items with 2 stars for each craft and give it to the npc if you wish to upgrade your crafting skill to lvl 4 and beyond. For medicine, you just go to the npc and buy the lvl 4 book for 50k. [Thanks for this info, meow.]
