For wuxia, at lvl 29, they have melee mastery which allows them to pump up the melee damage of their desired weapon.
Also, later on you won't be able to use every weapon as their are STR and DEX requirements in order to use the weapons.
swords, fist and spears require much more dex than axes. If you don't have enough, then you can't use it : P.
The beginning allows you to choose which weapon you like better though.
