I know there's a few fans of the series here, just wondering about other peoples opinions about the books that Brian Herbert wrote with Kevin J Anderson wrote together I really liked them, personally, I always thought Dune would make an awesome MMORPG, like do you want to be an Atreides? Harkonnen? Fremen? With all the great houses and the conflicts available and all the planets in the series, there's so much content that can be added Till then though...Perfect World!

I am glad of this trhead to have started. I have read Frank Herbert's Masterpiece more than 12 times, as it still is my favourite book. I must have read the 5 sequels Frank wrote about 3 times each, and all prequels from his son up to the 4th book. The Crusade of the machines has not reached spain yet in a pocket edition, and the next books are unheard of, here, so I am starving asking for more. I also thought Dune would be a hell of an MMORPG setting. It would be so different. So challenging... I think this IP has the potential to stablish new mmorpg mechanics, and make them work propperly. It is a setting which is asking for fresh design ideas. I would really love to have the chance to help, or even direct ( ) a Dune MMORPG designer team. We all are allowed to have dreams, arent we? I recently saw David Linch's Dune movie. The first Dune miniseries have aired in Spain, but not the Children of Dune ones, which is a real pity. I am happy we have a place to discuss this masterpiece in the shape of a novel.

Well I am not a direct Dune fan, but I loved the film as well as the game. I mean Dune 2000 - Battle for Arrakis, was the first RTS games on PC. I remember the time when I bought my first "Soundblaster" just to be able to play this game with some rocking sound :D ! For me it defined the whole RTS genre... so yeah its awesome. I could also imagine a MMORPG in this setting. But I am always sceptical of MMORPGs in predefined settings. They mostly tend to be very limited in scope and really need a great designer team and good imaginations to make everything work out well

That's true, LordDevil. Thats the reason I said Dune MMORPG would be asking for innovation. A MMORPG based in mobkilling would not be suitable to this IP. It claims for many people, in large parties joining forces to be able to develope a spice gathering operation. It needs an always changing player based economy, built around the spice. It requires clans to be extremely large, acting as houses whith strongholds that can be infiltered and sabotaged. It needs subtile murdering ways, treachery, and guilds protecting their leaders. And maybe not permadeath, but it needs death to mean someting, a great hit to guild structure. It is asking for raiding parties to steal spice and spice collecting machinery from convoys and independent businessmen who have not found a guild. it claims for smuglers, and free pvp... it asks for world TENSION between the fremen and the empire. Not forced to PVP, but lack of trust. Both fremen and empire have things the other faction needs, and they should be able obtain them by either diplomacy or force... And it need players to dictate history. Guilds to be able to shape the face of the world, the relations between fations, and real politics who can have power over those under their domains. Opressive chieftains and honorable leaders, and the power to revolt. It needs players making history, and the power to change things, and react to the events in the books, which should develope slowly as time passes. But all the stated above is just a dream I have. I am sure it will sound as a cliché, but Lord Devil... if you liked the movie, you have to read the book. It is much more deep, much more real... the writing style of Frank Herbert involves almost half of the book being in italics, reflecting the internal thoughts of the characters. It is amazingy well written, and it is an outstanding essay about ecology, and religion. The movie can't capture that. The miniseries are closer to the actual book than the David Linch movie (with soundguns and such inventions), but the acting is not that good, and the book is still a thousand times better than miniseries.

Most definately the book is better And both the movies I thought were well done But that's because I try not to compare them with the book, cause it takes a LOT more then even 20 hours of film to really capture Dune, it's an epic like Lord of the Rings

I'm not really a hardcore fan of Dune. But I roughly know the storyline and I've watched both the 1984 movie and Scifi.com's Frank Herbert's Dune miniseries than a couple of times. The movies don't really capture the essence of the epic but they were fun to watch anyway.
Played Dune II a heck of a lot of times and Dune 2000 too and boy that was fun.
The story itself is really epic in proportion and an MMO based on the Dune universe would really be something. I suppose it would be something like EVE Online with certain elements from SUN maybe.
Hold Devil's Pot of Tea..Mulan... What??... Lord Devil drinks tea???!!

I think Dune is a book about a single planet, Space travel was almost entirely under the control of the Guild, and this made the Guild extremely powerful as a hidden power behind the acts of the Padisha Emperor. If I had to design a Dune MMORPG, I would restrict it to one single planet: Arrakis. Living there is more than enough challenge for an MMO setting. And I would use the time setting of the start of the first Dune book. Dune is not a book about technology, or spaceships. I think it is a book about People, Conspiracies, Religion and Ecology. And it really sets the book apart from almost all other Science Fiction. In addition, I would try to avoid most of the things that got added in the RTS games (don't get me wrong, I know they are good. The good old Dune RTS is considered to be the first "modern" RTS) and remain faithful to the books. I don't know about you, but I love listening to podcasts. Sometime ago, I came across one where old scifi and fantasy is discussed. It is called Kick Ass Mystic Ninjas and I loved it. They did a podcast about the first Dune book, the movie and the miniseries. I found it interesting to see what did the host think about them. You can find this podcast here: http://www.kickassmysticninjas.com/podpress_trac/web/86/0/KAMN_011_060328.mp3
