Ok in the game after I find out I didnt like the pet I got, I turn it back to an egg at the tamer trainer (pink beast girl npc, 2nd option) I just drag the monster pic into the new box click it and it turns back to an egg, well I noticed one monster I leveled up 1 lvl, and when it was back in its egg form the requirement to use it went from lvl 15 as the egg was before, to now 16, based on this I believe the monster kept its original level! So theoretically if this all works out you CAN have and train more than 5 pets without buying more slots, you will just have to re-hatch them ^^;; I cant go check right now but I believe this might weork, give it a shot! oh and if you really dont want the pet anymore turn it into egg then sell it/drop it/ or just npc it (Most eggs at lvl 10-20 range from 400+ I believe, lvl 16 eggs being 700-750? If you npc them, so good way to make money).

if you turn a an equipped pet into an egg it costs the same as npc'ing it so your not actually making money.

you could tame some higher lvl pets later and just npc them after but its not worth it since the drops you get are worth practically the same.

best is to tame lots of popular pets and make a shop in town and sell them to others.

and yes you can have as many eggs as you want and just switch between them but it will be very costly.
best is just to get at least 3 slots and get 1 pet for land/water/air battles.
