I am interested in comments from others here who have played DDO how long is expected to reach the endgame in Module 4, or to reach the level cap of 12-14 for a casual or hardcore player. I am asking this because I noticed that retail cost of the Chinese version of DDO is waived from start since it is fully subsidized by its operator (Shanda) in the same manner as WOW China. DDO China has been in free public beta mode in Module 4 for five months already. I think I should give the game a try before they start charging money for it Master of the Pearly Tower

Well I played DDO a bit and so far I liked the game, even though its mostly intanced and completly different than other MMORPGs. So its not a complete world, its more like guildwars. Otherwise well, I didn't like the older graphic style too much too and also the company behind the game. The combat and magic rules however are original from D&D3.5 and fit greatly into the game. Still the game is more a tactical game than usual mmorpgs... you have very limited options during an adventure (an instance). E.g. your mana doesnt regenerate, thus making the game play very tactical. You have to know when to cast or not to cast, so you can keep enough mana for end of a dungeon or fight etc.
Kind regards, LD

Kind regards, LD Thanks LD for answering. Did you manage to reach the level cap of 10/12/14 fairly quickly or would it take considerable time to do so? What's the actual level cap for the board game using D&D 3.5 rules? 40 or more? Master of the Pearly Tower

The level cap is still 12 or 14 (as far as I remember from the last patches)... but thats "about" 60 levels... you always level up in steps. So following the original rules you make yourselve up to level 12 but each level consists of 5 sublevels. That means to reach level 12 you have to do 12x5=60 levels Also they want to raise the cap throughout the updates to level 20 (which is the highest that you will ever see in a D&D 3.5 game - there are no rules for higher levels). However if you reach level 20 then you can also do the prestige classes (I dont think this is implemented yet... but they wanted to do it a long time ago). Prestige classes are special classes you can only be once you reach this high level - don't know the exact rules of D&D anymore. Kind regards, LD

I even quit WoW to try DDO only to find out the game was utter... yeah. I just wonder how the game would have been if the game had been made by some other company, and had featured the entire D&D realm as playable seamless map...

It's same as the Rank system in many Chinese MMORPG - one level/rank is consists of several sub-levels (usually 10). But this is the first time I know of a Western game that implements it I have been downloading the DDO client for two days already, so that I can play it over the coming long weekend holiday. Might as well give it a try since it is free Also thanks to Arcman and Cyanhide for their comments. Master of the Pearly Tower

Leveling is fairly easy in DDO:Stormreach and was fun to play if only to hear Gary Gygax doing his camp Game Master routine. I didn't buy the game but did try it out for 10 days and managed to get my Bard to lv 9 along with some nifty gear that included a +5 Vorpal Crossbow of Sonic something or other...
A one month subscription should be more than enough to hit the cap and try out Vampire/Dragon runs.

I played DDO for several months, after taking a break from WoW. There were many aspects of the game that I really liked. The graphics were nice. The sound effects in the dungeons was perfect. Creeping through the dungeons, watching out for traps and unexpected monsters was pretty cool. But what killed it for me is that is was just not possible to solo the dungeons after level 4 even when building a hybrid character just for that purpose. And when joining a PUG, they always seemed to be in a hurry to get through the dungeons rather than enjoying the journey. Also there was the stupidest decision I had ever seen in a game design - if you got hit with a blindness spell from a mob, your whole screen would go black so that you could no longer play the game. And I don't mean it would go black for a few seconds or minutes, it would go black for like 24 hours or until you got healed, and that wasn't too easy for a solo player let me tell you lol. That game finally made me mad enough that I quit and never logged back on even though I had 3 weeks remaining in a paid month. I would only recommend it to D&D fans who have a group of friends lined up to play together with on a regular basis, or I suppose to seriously masochistic solo players.

Thank you kindly Leode and Grasshopper for very useful comments I reached level 2 in the 2nd day of solo playing but I believe a party is quite necessary after level 3. For information, Chinese translation of DDO is very good and they did not resort to name-changing characters as in PW-MY English. Rather transliteration or Sinicization (similar to Romanization of Chinese words)is used for names. Master of the Pearly Tower
